In times of continuously growing online sales and digital revolution, innovative store concepts gain essential relevance. In a globalised and digitalised world, the desire for physical closeness, exchange with other human beings and emotionality grow significantly. A sensual and “real” experience needs to engage, and a world of experiences needs to be developed to create attractive public spaces.

In Retail Design we work with hybrid and future-orientated concepts to satisfy these needs. Like no other industry physical retail is deeply rooted in people’s everyday reality. To keep physical brand spaces relevant and attractive it is of upmost importance to encompass these changes in future design.

The main objective is to develop a society-friendly design attitude that facilitates an attractive interplay of retail, gastronomy, and public space.

The Retail Design course at the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf pays particular attention to the economic interests of retail, socio-cultural expectations, and the historical dimensions, to reflect present developments and to integrate them into innovative design solutions. The focus of the course lies in supporting conceptual thinking and its translation into spatial design. An understanding is developed of how the economy works, the competitive environment and consumers’ behaviour. The gained insights linked with the reflection of history, art and the economy are translated into artistic creation.

Contact:

Nadine Nebel

nadine.nebel@hs-duesseldorf.de

design.hs-duesseldorf.de/retaildesign

RETAIL DESIGN & VISUAL MERCHANDISING STUDIES AT THE JAK ACADEMY HAMBURG

Since 2009, as the first institution in Germany, the JAK Academy has been offering the subject Retail Design & Visual Merchandising.
